I made my first dolla’ dolla bill ya’ll!

When people make their first dollar in a business, they usually frame it and stick that bad boy up on the wall with pride! It shows the hard work and planning that went into making their business a real thing. Since I am not brick and mortar, I have decided to take a picture of my first money made! And since it’s a $20.00 it will not be sitting in frame getting dusty, it will be going back into my Motherbaking business.

Full disclosure, I was never supposed to get paid. I am still at the focus group level and don’t expect to be up and running for another three or four weeks. Still, I am proud and also grateful for giving people, like my teacher friend Erica (I call all my old co-workers teacher-friends, because they are they only friends who can relate to that kind of work stress), who gave me a lovely card and paid me for my lactation samples.

I have no idea where this business will take me. I don’t want to be rich, but I do want to make a difference, and so that is my expectation of myself. I am excited for some of the items, not just baked goods, I am preparing for all you mom’s out there. In addition, each month ten percent of my proceeds will go to a charity of my choice in Lakeland. Month zero will be NLC Family Preservation Center of Lakeland.

And so, my motherbaking adventure begins!

First Brussel Sprouts, Next World Domination…

I always said if I could get my kids to eat (like actually chew and swallow) brussel sprouts, I could do anything. Well folks, it’s time for world domination because I just made a brussels recipe my kids loved. Well, loved may be a little strong, perhaps I even bribed them with dessert, but that never worked before so I consider this a success.

This vegetable is kind of an acquired taste, what with the bitter after-taste that comes with it. And it’s hard to acquire a taste when we don’t have them that often. I try to feed my family all organic, with the exception of eating out once or twice a week. I live by the 80/20 rule; if you have found a way to live 100 percent organic with out being bored let me know your secret! With that said, trying to find organic brussels, even in our Whole Foods, is like searching for hidden treasure, so my kids don’t get to eat it too often. That’s unfortunate because these green bundles of joy are loaded with fiber, cholesterol-lowering benefits, DNA stabilizers and are known to have the highest glucosinolate (cancer-fighter) content of the green veggie group!

When we do finally get to eat them, I have to find a way to mask the unappealing taste; the one I, as an adult, can choke down, while my kids can just look at it and be disgusted. So here is my secret; see if it works for you!

Ingredients:

  • One bag of fresh brussel sprouts
  • Two (or however many you want) pieces of bacon (I like Applegate Organics)
  • Garlic
  • Himalayan Pink Salt
  • Pepper
  • Lemon (if you want it)

Directions:

  1. First I microwave the bacon in a microwavable safe plate to catch the grease. I know this sounds healthy already right?
  2. Cut off all the ends of the brussels and then cut them in half.
  3. Sautee in a pan with olive oil and garlic
  4.  Tear off piece of bacon and add to brussels
  5. Sprinkle on the bacon grease from the microwavable plate (or dump it on depending how healthy you want it!)
  6. Add salt, pepper and lemon to taste

Pretty simple, yet so tasty! And Paleo friendly… if your into all that.

 

Lactation Situation?

So after becoming a mother, and then becoming a mother trying to nurse with a low milk supply, I turned to anything that would help. And then I found cookies! Cookies should be the answer to every problem right? Since then I have been on a mission to find a way to hide the healthy benefits of Brewer’s Yeast, Flax and Whole Oats (the healthy trifecta). On their own they can be quite unappetizing, but hide those within a the right mix of ingredients and you get a beneficial snack.

These ingredients are used in many lactation recipes, but they can really be eaten at any time. My husband devoured them. After eating about five of them he asked “So does this mean I am going to lactate?”

No, these will not defy the laws of nature and cause men, children or non-nursing women to start developing a milk supply. They contain healthy vitamins and minerals not found in large quantities in everyday foods.

Brewer’s yeast, while filled with incredible nutrients like selenium, potassium, magnesium and folate, can taste pretty nasty on its own. Baking it into the cookies is a great way to hide that taste under sweetness, while also filling your body with these vitamins and minerals.

Flaxseed gives your body the Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids (good fat, yes! there is such a thing!). Whole oats have been praised for decades on their benefits, from a healthy cardiovascular system, stabilizing blood sugars, and providing a good source of fiber.

Though these ingredients do encourage milk supply in nursing women by supplying the nutrients they need, they can also be a great addition to anyone’s diet.

PB&Jam Time Smoothie

This has become a kid-favorite in my house and a great way for me to sneak in some greens. I don’t know about your kids, but my daughter picks around every shade of green on her plate. Try this PB&J in a cup. It’s a healthy snack for everyone!

1/2 cup fresh spinach

1 cup frozen strawberries

1/2 cup frozen blueberries

1 generous tablespoon of peanut butter

1 teaspoon of raw honey

1/2 cup your choice of nut milk (1 cup depending on how thick you like your smoothies!)

Blend until all ingredient are mixed well. Drink, enjoy, repeat!

  • For nursing mother, you can a teaspoon of ground flax and brewers yeast, and have a cup of oats to help promote milk production.

Nine Shameful Mom Moments

There are moments in my parenting adventure that I am not super proud of. And some of these things have definitely come back to bite me in the tail. See number two, and six, and… okay all of them. Somehow, despite all my parenting mishaps, my little man is slowly turning out to be a semi-normal kid. The verdict is still out on my daughter, who is only one and still impressionable.

1. Deep into a tantrum, I give up and mimic his immature actions.

I have never been great at the whole “patience” thing. I feel like I’ve gotten better at this when I became a parent, but catch me on the wrong day and it’s game over!

2. Potty training my son in the back yard

To be honest, this was out of pure laziness on my part. Now I am reaping the consequences. Every time he needs to go now, he asks me if he can “go potty in the grass”. We are slowly learning that is not acceptable. Slowly.

3. Letting him watch a movie I was sure was “ok for kids”.

I was sure that there was little violence, but I didn’t think about the language. To be more specific, I let him watch Back to the Future, which I remember as tame compared to movies today. Next day, he went around in his pretend DeLorean saying “gweat Scott” and “holy ship”.

 

4. Speaking of movies, letting him stay in the room while I watched a scary movie.

If you didn’t think I was a bad parent before, this will take the cake. When he was about 18 months, I was doing dishes and watching the Walking Dead on Netflix. One minute he was playing with toys in his pack and play, the next I lookup and he is staring at the zombie apocalypse. These days, “mommy’s shows” are reserved for 8:30 p.m.

5. Scarfing down my cookie in the drive way, so I don’t have to share.

6. Having a glass of wine before the a.m. to p.m. switch.

This is not unheard of people! Hello, brunch. And also red wine on a Monday morning after the gym is ok, right?

 

7. Buying myself a present from my one-year old

Confession. I bought myself a cute purse, wrapped it, and had him put it under the tree, labeled from him of course.

 

8. Hiding sweets in the frozen broccoli bag, which I still do.

Between my husband and two kids, it’s hard to find leftover sweet treats in the house. Mainly because we really don’t have them that often, so when we do, I make sure to pack a little extra away for my selfish needs.

9. Forcing my kid to answer the door on Halloween.

It was his second Halloween, about 17 months old. I thought it would be fun for him to answer the door and hand out candy. My son had doorbell PTSD for three months and would run and hide under the couch for fear of costumed children. I only laughed a little each time.

 

Some of these I have learned some definite lessons from. I’ll be the first to admit I still slip up. I strive everyday to appreciate my children and help to them to be better people. They even teach me to be a better person, and for that I am grateful.
